You drop off a blazer with a mystery stain, and a few days later it comes back looking brand new. But what actually happened in between? A lot of people have never thought about it, and a few people have thought about it too much and quietly wondered if their clothes just come back from some kind of magic.
Here’s what really goes on behind the counter.
“Dry” Cleaning Isn’t Actually Dry
The name is a little misleading. Dry cleaning refers to the fact that no water is used in the main cleaning process — but your garments absolutely get wet. Traditional dry cleaners use chemical solvents to lift oils, stains, and soil from fabric without the mechanical stress that water and a washing machine would cause.
At Orchid Cleaners, we go a step further. We use a process called wet cleaning — an advanced, eco-friendly technique that uses water, but with biodegradable, non-toxic detergents and computer-controlled machines that are gentle enough for the most delicate fabrics. No harsh petrochemical solvents. No perchloroethylene (perc). Just cleaner clothes and a cleaner conscience.
Step 1: Inspection and Tagging
When your garments arrive at one of our Orlando-area locations, the first thing our team does is inspect them carefully. We’re looking at the fabric type, checking the care label, noting any existing stains or damage, and identifying anything that needs special attention.
Every item gets tagged so it stays with your order through the entire process — nothing ever gets mixed up.
Step 2: Pre-Treatment
Stains get treated before anything else. Different stains require different chemistry: grease responds to one treatment, wine to another, ink to another. Our team spots each problem area and applies the right solution — by hand — before the garment ever goes into a machine.
This is where a lot of the real work happens, and it’s why professional cleaning outperforms DIY stain removal in almost every case.
Step 3: Cleaning
Depending on the garment, it’s cleaned using our wet cleaning process or our dry cleaning method. Our GreenEarth process uses a silicone-based solvent that’s non-toxic, odorless, and far gentler on fabric than traditional perc dry cleaning. Delicate silks, structured blazers, beaded gowns — each one gets the method that suits it best.
Step 4: Finishing
This is what makes a professionally cleaned garment look professionally cleaned. After washing, every item is pressed, steamed, and shaped by hand. Shirts get crisp collars. Trousers get sharp creases. Suits get their structure back.
You can wash a dress shirt at home and get it clean — but it rarely comes out looking like this. Finishing is the difference.
Step 5: Quality Check and Packaging
Before anything goes back on the rack, it’s inspected again. If a stain didn’t fully lift, we treat it again. If a button is loose, our team flags it. Nothing ships back to you unless it meets the standard.
Then it’s packaged — hung, covered, and ready.
Why It Matters for Your Wardrobe
Clothes that get professionally cared for last significantly longer. The fibers don’t break down as quickly, colors stay true, and structure is preserved. For investment pieces — a quality suit, a cashmere coat, a formal dress — professional cleaning isn’t an extra expense. It’s what protects the investment.
